About MOT's
MOT certificates are issued by a nominated tester at a nominated test station on behalf of VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency). The MOT test covers and inspects aspects of car safety, roadworthiness and exhaust emissions and the purpose of the MOT test is to ensure the vehicle being tested meets the minimum safety level required by law.

What is a valid MOT certificate?
It is a document required by UK law to ensure that all motorists keep their vehicles at a minimum standard of safety and repair, regardless of the vehicles age, who drives it or what it is used for. A valid MOT certificate only confirms that your vehicle met all of the required standards of roadworthiness on the day it was tested. It does not mean or guarantee that your vehicle will remain in the same condition for the next 12 months, nor does it mean that the vehicle does not need to have routine maintenance and servicing carried out within the next 12 months.

When does my vehicle require an MOT?
A vehicle does not require an MOT until it is 3 years old, after that it is the owner's responsibility to ensure the vehicle is examined every 12 months. However here's the 'Good News' - once you have had your vehicle MOT Test completed by Great Coates Motors we log it on our computer system and send reminders to all our customers so you will not forget in the future (unless you change your vehicle and do not tell us).

When can I get my vehicle tested?
You must have your vehicle tested before the expiry date on your current MOT certificate; however, you can have it tested up to 28 days before the expiry date - giving you a 13-month MOT certificate providing you bring your existing certificate to us at the time of testing. Remember once you have had your vehicle MOT Test completed by Great Coates Motors we log it on our computer system and send reminders to all our customers so you will not forget in the future (unless you change your vehicle and do not tell us).

How long does an MOT take and can I wait?
An MOT test will take around 1 hour to complete and here at Great Coates Motors we have a comfortable, clean reception area with Tea & Coffee facilities - so just bring a book, magazine or even your lap top and the time will fly by.

What if my current MOT certificate has expired by accident or I have let it expire?
Either way you are breaking the law if you do not have a valid MOT certificate and you could end up being prosecuted. There are now many systems in place to detect vehicles on the road without a valid MOT certificate so you can't hide. Another important point to remember is that you also need a valid MOT certificate to renew your road tax and if you are involved in an accident, your insurance could be affected if you do not have a valid MOT certificate.

However there is some 'Good News' - once you have had your vehicle MOT Test completed by Great Coates Motors we log it on our computer system and send reminders to all our customers so you will not forget in the future (unless you change your vehicle and do not tell us).
